Essay Writing Guide. Essays are intended to develop, test and show your capacity for acquiring knowledge and understanding, and for presenting an argument on the basis of that knowledge and understanding. Writing essays should also make the subject more interesting to you and give you the chance to be creative.

This guide is designed to help in the preparation and presentation of all written work and to inform you of the general stylistic conventions that we follow in the History Department. There are no universally accepted conventions for writing, references and bibliographies, as you will see if you look at any range of books, articles or newspapers.
